Renfrew sits on the Bonnechere River about an hour west of Ottawa. It’s an established county town with genuine history, everyday amenities, and often more house for your money than the faster-growing towns nearby.
The character

The town that gave us the NHL

Renfrew’s claim to fame is genuine: the National Hockey Association (forerunner of the NHL) was launched here in 1909, and in 1910 local tycoon M.J. O’Brien built the legendary Renfrew Millionaires, luring stars like “Cyclone” Taylor in a bid for the Stanley Cup. That heritage lives on at the NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum. Add the Bonnechere River, the 1850s McDougall Mill Museum, the Swinging Bridge, and one of Canada’s longest-running fairs, and Renfrew has a character all its own.
